The true meaning of freedom

Who remembers this day 22 years ago?  I remember going to vote and the spirit of optimism that pervaded the country.  There was a sense of something new and bright.  A feeling as though we had been cleansed and were given an opportunity for a new start.  A new country.  This day, 27th April, commemorates the day in 1994 when the first democratic election was held in South Africa.

Today, South Africa celebrates Freedom Day to mark the beginning of new freedoms for all South Africans.  Whatever our colour, we were all oppressed by a regime that did not allow freedom to befriend our fellow man.

Today we have our problems as with freedom comes responsibility and consequences for actions taken.  You cannot have true freedom without boundaries.  Unchecked freedom is anarchy.  We all need to implement controls and put our own ethics in to remain and truly be free.  When you think of freedom think of what it takes.  The person who is truly free is the one with a pure heart and clean hands, who can honestly say their actions are toward the greater good.
